Bump Update: The First 20 Weeks

I made Brennan take a picture of me this morning in our kitchen. I forgot it was the 20 week mark! ha. We weren't fully awake yet, but here it is! Speaking of Brennan, I gotta brag on him for a minute. 

Brennan has been vegan for four years and is incredible at knowing exactly what it takes to live that lifestyle. I see how healthy, energized, and active he is and have decided to join him on that journey. It's not always an easy transition, sometimes I forget to read all of the labels but luckily he is so great at making sure that I am well fed. He makes my lunches everyday, preps our dinners, and does most of our shopping. How did I get so lucky? 

Here's a bump update for you:
Due Date: August 15th
How far along: 20 weeks (HALF WAY! WHAT!)
Size of baby: 6.5 inches & 10.1 ounces; size of a banana - I don't get how that works but that is what my Bump app says, so. 
How many days to go: 20 weeks!
Miss anything: Wine. Seriously. It's really hard to grade papers without wine.
Movement: A little! Mostly flutters and some random jabs.
Food cravings: Carbs. I want all the breadsticks, English muffins, toast, pancakes. All of it.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing, really. I was lucky in the first trimester to skip the morning sickness nastiness. I did get the stomach flu for 3 days though. That was horrible.
Have you started to show yet: A little bit, finally. I'm okay with it taking a long time though. Kids asking questions is awkward. Still in all of my normal clothes but using the hair tie trick to extend the pants a little. 
Gender: We find out at our next appointment! Well, sort of. We're doing a gender reveal for my birthday on April 14th at our gender reveal party. I can't wait!
Labor signs: None. Which is good!
Weight Gain: 6 pounds so far. sigh.
Happy or moody most of the time: Happy and busy. Also, very tired.

Symptoms: Ugh, just high school style acne! I've always had acne (never grew out of it. Lame.) but this stuff is weird and topical. 
Looking forward to: Finding out the gender soon! Will it be a little Harper Lynn or Lincoln Arthur?

How is being mostly vegan during pregnancy?

I attribute my healthy weight gain to working out 3 days a week and going on a walk with Brennan and the pups when the weather allows. I do sometimes I have cravings for things like mozzarella sticks or sausage McMuffins, but Brennan makes a delicious breakfast sandwich that is vegan and we recently found some great cheese substitute options. We also found vegan french onion dip. It's amazing stuff.

Another layer is to arm yourself with research if you choose to go with this lifestyle during pregnancy, it's been one of the best choices I've made so far- but everyone is different.

Suggested books & readings:
  • The Everything Vegan Pregnancy Book it's been a GREAT read and only about $13.00 on Amazon.com
  • Vegan Pregnancy Survival Guide it's a perfect size for your purse so that when you are out and need to check some information  (or are sitting awkwardly in the waiting room at the doctor's office) you can pull it out. 
  • Raise Vegan They have an app, a magazine, and an eBook that answers a lot of questions and helps to establish your vegan life and raising your child. It talks about all different elements of the process and has features that help you immerse into the lifestyle as much as you'd like.  They're also on Instagram @raisevegan

Doctor support: 
We see a doctor/midwife group for our prenatal care and it works out really well. The doctor side of the office is very technical and isn't as informed about the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. However, our midwives that we see are very supportive of our lifestyle choice and respect what we've decided to do for our baby and our family. It could be because we are in a big city we had more options for care so we took time to find somewhere that worked for us.

Key things to keep in mind:
  • Everyone and their dog will ask you about your protein intake. Be ready with an answer. I haven't had any issue with protein. My flax milk every day has protein and calcium, Brennan puts a protein staple in each meal, and I even add Orgain Vegan Protein & Greens in the vanilla flavor to my coffee in the mornings.
  • You need to find a good vegan DHA & prenatal vitamin. Be sure to talk to your doctor about this, but the ones I love are: Rainbow Light Prenatal and Vegan DHA for the baby's development.

  • Molly T. at FashionVeggie.com is super awesome. She's one of my favorites to follow on Instagram also. She is also pregnant with her first baby! You can catch up with her by searching @fashionveggie on Insta. Her focus is mainly on fashion on her blog but her insta is about all the things. I secretly pretend we're friends. haha.
  • Caroline at the Plant Based Blonde.com is also super great to follow. She is always posting great tips, food ideas, and other great stuff for a plant based lifestyle. She's on Insta as @plantbasedblonde
  • Jenn at Neurotic Mommy.com is a new one I've discovered recently and she is also great. Her yummy treats are to DIE for and I keep trying to convince Brennan to make me all the things she posts. I'd probably gain 100 pounds if that were the case though. haha. I really appreciate a lot of her posts on pregnancy and mindset. They are a great resource. She is also on Insta as @neuroticmommy
Pregnancy has been quite a journey! It was such a surprise for us and I really struggled with coming to terms with it, but now I've found myself starting to enjoy it. Hopefully finding out the gender will make it even more exciting!
